Leaving behind the busy streets of Paris for a sunny weekend along the French Riviera feels like entering a completely different world. While Paris offers its own unique sophistication, Nice presents a wonderful mix of Mediterranean beauty, art, and a relaxed coastal lifestyle — all enhanced by clear skies and the gentle sound of waves.
The trip from Paris to Nice offers a natural change of scenery. As you travel, the countryside of central France gradually gives way to the stunning coastline of the Côte d’Azur. Along the way, the views change, and the mood shifts. We loved the Paris–Nice train for the sea views by train for a sun-filled weekend adventure, and it turned out to be the perfect way to kick off a getaway on the French Riviera. Beyond the journey, the real charm was discovering Nice itself, a vibrant, sun-soaked city where culture, seaside walks and timeless Mediterranean vibes create an unforgettable escape.
A City Bathed in Light
Nice is more than just a city; it’s an experience defined by its atmosphere. The unique quality of light here has drawn artists for generations, including famous names like Matisse and Chagall. The way the sun illuminates the sea and city streets creates a warm glow that makes every corner inviting and picturesque.
A great place to start exploring is the Promenade des Anglais, a palm-lined walkway stretching along the coast. It offers a perfect setting for a relaxed walk or even a quick swim in the sparkling Mediterranean. The atmosphere here is lively yet soothing—cyclists glide past, street musicians add a soundtrack, and visitors pause to take in the calming sea views.
Markets, Art, and Historic Streets
One of the pleasures of spending time in Nice is the chance to slow down and savor the surroundings. The Old Town, or Vieux Nice, is full of narrow streets lined with colorful buildings that house cozy cafes, wine shops, and artisan stores. The air is filled with the aromas of herbs, fresh bread, and lavender.
The Cours Saleya Market is a highlight, offering a colorful display of flowers, cheeses, fresh fruits, and local specialties. Trying socca, a savory chickpea pancake, is a must—it’s a traditional dish that locals love and visitors often find unforgettable.
For those interested in art, the Musée Matisse and Musée Marc Chagall provide a glimpse into the lives and works of two artists who were inspired by the city’s beauty. These museums not only showcase remarkable pieces but also help visitors understand why Nice became such a beloved refuge for creative minds.
Sunsets and Coastal Dining
As evening approaches, Nice reveals another side of its charm. The sunsets over the sea are breathtaking, with shades of orange and purple painting the sky. A favorite spot to watch this natural spectacle is Castle Hill (Colline du Château), which offers sweeping views of the coastline and the city below.
Dining in Nice is a relaxed yet flavorful experience. The local cuisine blends fresh Mediterranean ingredients with French culinary traditions. Dishes like grilled fish, authentic Niçoise salads, and stuffed vegetables are enjoyed with chilled rosé wine. Many restaurants feature outdoor seating where guests can savor their meals while soaking in the lively atmosphere.
Exploring Beyond Nice
Nice is a fantastic destination on its own, but it also serves as a convenient base for exploring the surrounding Riviera. Nearby towns such as Villefranche-sur-Mer, Èze, and Monaco are easily accessible and each offers its own unique attractions—from medieval villages perched on cliffs to glamorous seaside resorts.
Even within Nice, there are hidden treasures to discover: quiet chapels, secluded beaches, and charming bakeries that serve delicious local desserts like tarte au citron. The city’s effortless beauty lies in these little surprises that invite visitors to explore beyond the usual tourist paths.
A Weekend That Feels Like a True Escape
What makes a weekend in Nice so special is how quickly you can leave the pace of city life behind. Just a few hours from Paris, you find yourself immersed in a Mediterranean lifestyle that’s relaxed and sun-filled. Whether you’re enjoying coffee on a shady terrace, wandering through a secret garden, or swimming in clear blue waters, the experience feels like a refreshing breath of fresh air.
So while we loved the Paris–Nice train for the sea views, it was the sunny charm, culture, and coastal beauty of Nice that made our weekend truly unforgettable.
